Tips for training dogs with treats
Use Akela kibble as low-value treats. Akela kibble is 80% meat or fish, containing far more goodness than a lot of supermarket treats - it should be tasty enough to save some from breakfast to use throughout the day for simple exercises in low distraction environments. These are often referred to as low-value treats. Kibble (dry training treats) are perfect for this. Using kibble also reduces the chances of your dog becoming overweight.
High-value treats. These are used for results in high distraction environments. When you need their attention quickly! Our Chicken/Lamb Teasers and Venison treats are fantastic high-value treats and will hold your dog's attention.
Mix the treats in a treat pouch - your dog will aim to please for longer hoping the next treat is an extra tasty one!
Use small tasty treats. Excess chewing distracts them from learning.
Remember to use treats sparingly for puppies and overweight dogs. Reward with praise, mental games, exercise toys, and play too. The reward shouldn't always be food.
If your dog is normally food or ball orientated but during training does not accept them then the environment is either too distracting or stressful,or they do not understand what is being asked of them. Try taking it back a level in a less distracting environment (such as your living room or garden). You would not want to enter a talent show on the stage in front of an audience if you had not learned and practiced in a private environment first.
